Drone Application for Phragmites (Common Reed) Control
Phragmites Control
Phragmites australis (common reed) is a tall, aggressive reed that forms near-impenetrable stands in wet margins and ditches.

How to identify it
Phragmites, or common reed, is a very tall grass (often well over head height) that grows in dense, near-solid stands. From late summer through fall each stem is topped by a large, feathery, purple-brown seed plume that fades to tan and lingers through winter.

Why it’s a problem
Phragmites grows tall and dense enough to wall off a waterbody. It spreads by rhizome and stolon across wet margins and ditches and crowds out native wetland plants, all in saturated ground a crew can't walk or drive.
When a drone is the right tool (vs. a boat)
Overhead application puts an aquatic-approved product at label rate onto the canopy of a tall, dense reed stand, reaching the saturated margins and ditch lines a ground crew can't penetrate. Repeat coverage, which Phragmites needs, stays practical that way.
Best time to treat
Ahead of winter the reed pushes its resources down into the rhizomes, and that late-summer-to-early-fall stretch is when a systemic aquatic-approved product rides down with them. Established Phragmites rarely yields to a single pass, so plan on multiple seasons.
Treatment cost
Reed stands price by how far they run and what it takes to reach them. Tell us what your margins look like and we'll quote it.
A note on results: a treatment reduces an infestation, and no application can guarantee a percent kill. We scope every job to the site in front of us and tell you what a pass is likely to do.
Aquatic safety & permitting posture
We apply only aquatic-approved products, at label rate, for the target and the site. Depending on the water and the jurisdiction, some waterbodies need notification or a permit before anyone treats them, and we coordinate that with the owner before we fly.
