How to identify it
Giant salvinia is a small floating fern, not a flowering plant. Look for pairs of oval green leaves along a horizontal stem; as the mat crowds, the leaf pairs fold together and stack into chains. The leaf tops are covered in rows of tiny, eggbeater-shaped hairs that make them shed water.

Why it’s a problem
Giant salvinia thickens into multi-layer rafts a boat physically can't push through. It smothers the water column and re-establishes from tiny fragments, which is why complete, repeated coverage matters so much.
