The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is an aggressive mound-builder found across Texas pasture, hay ground, and recreational land.
How to identify it
Red imported fire ants are small, reddish-brown ants best known by their nests: dome-shaped mounds of loose, fluffy soil with no obvious central opening, which boil over with aggressive, stinging ants when disturbed. Mounds pop up across open pasture, hay ground, and lawns.

Why it’s a problem
Fire ants build mounds across wide acreage, threaten livestock, wildlife, and people, and chew up hay equipment. Treating them well takes even coverage over the whole infested area, which is hard to pull off where a spreader truck can't drive.
When a drone is the right tool (vs. a ground rig)
Bait goes out evenly across large or broken acreage on a set schedule. Wet bottoms, steep ground, and the pasture corners a truck skips all get covered, and nothing runs over the field to compact it.
Best time to treat
Broadcast bait works best when the ants are actively foraging and the ground is warm but not baking: generally late spring and again in early fall, in mild weather. We avoid the peak heat of midsummer afternoons, cold snaps, and any application right before rain. Fire-ant control is seasonal maintenance: a treatment in spring and another in fall.
