Prickly Pear / Cactus Control
Prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) and other range cactus are segmented, spined pads that spread across overgrazed and rocky range.
How to identify it
Prickly pear grows as clumps of flat, oval, blue-green pads joined edge to edge and studded with spines and tiny barbed glochids. In spring it carries yellow-to-orange flowers along the pad rims, which ripen into reddish-purple fruit (“tunas”).

Why it’s a problem
Prickly pear spreads from dropped pads and shrugs off the drought that stresses forage grass. Its spines and glochids make hand or ATV work miserable and slow, and heavy stands take usable grazing land out of production.
When a drone is the right tool (vs. a ground rig)
An even pad treatment goes down across a broad infestation from above. Nobody wades into the spines, nothing high-centers on rock, and single clumps can be picked off while the open pasture around them is left alone.
Best time to treat
For aerial (drone) application, spring and fall are the most effective windows: prickly pear is a cool-season grower and takes up a pad treatment best then. The plant should be healthy and not drought-stressed, and we don't treat when the pads are wet or during a hard freeze. Pads die back slowly, so survivors and a follow-up pass are normal.
Treatment cost
We quote prickly pear off how much of the range it has taken and what the terrain does to a ground crew. Broad, rocky, spine-dense stands are the easy case. Ask us for a number on yours.
